Canon's LP-E6 battery has been through four versions since 2009: the LP-E6, LP-E6N, LP-E6NH and, most recently, the LP-E6P. They all share the same size and shape, which makes it easy to mix them up. This guide explains what changed between each version, which cameras use them, and which one you need.
Quick Answer
All four batteries fit the same cameras and chargers. The main differences are capacity and support for newer camera features. The LP-E6NH and LP-E6P hold the most charge. The LP-E6P was introduced with the EOS R5 Mark II, which relies on it for full performance. For older LP-E6 cameras, any version (or a quality replacement such as the Hridz LP-E6 / LP-E6NH battery) will work.
LP-E6 vs LP-E6N vs LP-E6NH vs LP-E6P Comparison
| Battery | Released | Capacity | Voltage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LP-E6 | 2009 | 1800mAh | 7.2V | Original version, launched with the EOS 5D Mark II |
| LP-E6N | 2014 | 1865mAh | 7.2V | Slightly higher capacity, improved cells |
| LP-E6NH | 2020 | 2130mAh | 7.2V | Launched with the EOS R5 and R6; supports in-camera USB charging on compatible bodies |
| LP-E6P | 2024 | 2130mAh | 7.2V | Launched with the EOS R5 Mark II, which relies on it for full performance |
LP-E6 vs LP-E6N
The LP-E6N was a small update: capacity rose from 1800mAh to 1865mAh. It works in every LP-E6 camera and charger, so the two are fully interchangeable.
LP-E6N vs LP-E6NH
The LP-E6NH raised capacity to 2130mAh, which means more shots per charge. It arrived with Canon's first full-frame R-series bodies. On cameras such as the EOS R5 and R6, you can charge it inside the camera over USB-C with a compatible USB Power Delivery adapter. The original LP-E6 can't be charged this way.
LP-E6NH vs LP-E6P
The LP-E6P keeps the same 2130mAh capacity but is designed for the higher power draw of the EOS R5 Mark II. Older LP-E6-series batteries still fit the R5 Mark II, but Canon limits some high-power features with them. If you shoot with an R5 Mark II, use the LP-E6P.

Can You Mix LP-E6 Versions?
Yes. You can use any LP-E6-series battery in any LP-E6 camera, and any LP-E6 charger charges all of them. Newer cameras may show a lower shot count or limit some features with older batteries, and cameras with in-camera USB charging only charge the newer versions.
